How to Enable or Disable Automatic Updates on Mac

These days enabling automatic updates has become the norm on practically every operating system. This has its benefits – you don’t have to manually download updates to apps and all critical security patches are downloaded automatically to your phone or computer.

Enabling automatic updates on a smartphone doesn’t really bother most people. Sometimes apps may start crashing after updates but by and large, apps continue to work as expected after updates. You’re also unlikely to be using a bunch of apps at the same time. However, that’s not true on a Mac or a PC.

At any point we’ve got at least eight apps open. Enabling automatic updates is convenient but not the best idea because apps have to be closed before installation can begin. That prompt tends to interrupt our workflow and we’d rather not deal with it in the middle of the work day.

First up, let’s figure out how to enable or disable automatic updates on Mac.

  1. Click the Apple logo on the top left and open System Preferences.
  2. Click on App Store. Now you’ll see a bunch of options dealing with automatic updates on macOS.
  3. To disable automatic updates, click on the tick mark next to Automatically check for updates to uncheck it, which is checked by default.
  4. To enable automatic updates, click the empty box next to Automatically check for updates. You’ll see a tick mark in the box now.

macOS automatic update options

That covers the basics. If you follow these steps, you will either enable or disable the system’s automatic checks for app and macOS updates. There are other options here that let you choose when you want to download and install updates.

The first option is Download available updates in the background. This is enabled by default and macOS automatically downloads all updates in the background and prompts you when they are ready to install. If you disable this, you’ll simply get a notification stating that updates are available. Downloading updates in the background is generally a good idea as you don’t have to wait for downloads to complete when you manually update. However, if you often use cellular data on your Mac, you might end up with a big data bill if you leave this option checked.

The second option is Install app updates and the third one is Install macOS updates. If you enable these both, the system will automatically install – not just download – all updates. We don’t recommend this for most people as it tends to interrupt what you’re doing and gives updates first priority. These options are not enabled by default.

The fourth option is Install system data files and security updates. This is also enabled by default and we recommend that you let it be enabled. It pushes critical security patches to your Mac as soon as they are available, so it’s best have this on at all times.

This should answer your queries around automatic updates on macOS. For OS updates, macOS also lets you automatically install them late at night when you aren’t using the machine. This option pops up as a notification to install updates when you are working, but you can snooze that and have the updates installed at night.

How to Switch to a New Gmail Account

Is it time to finally move on from thatcool_duude1314@gmail.com email address you signed up in college and get yourself one that sounds a little less… quirky? Then it might be time to learn how to migrate to a new Gmail address.

We’ve all been there – the early days of the Internet were a dark time, and those ‘cool’ email addresses sounded like a good idea at the time. But getting a new email address that you aren’t ashamed of putting down on your CV makes sense. Signing up for a new Gmail – or any other email account – is simple enough, but you don’t want to leave all your old emails behind or have to keep managing two accounts, right?

The good news is that you don’t have to do either of those things. There are two ways you can proceed – you could transfer all the old mails to your new email account, so that everything is searchable and accessible in one place. Or, you could manage your older account from your new Gmail account, so both remain active. Both methods work fine, though the first is a lot simpler, once the initial setup is done.

This is what you need to do if you want to migrate to a new Gmail account from an older one. Please note that these steps only work when you open Gmail on a desktop browser, as not all options are available in the Gmail app or via the mobile version of Gmail. Instead, if you want, you can add your older accounts (including non-Gmail ones) to the app so you can access them all in the same place.

Move emails from one Gmail account to another

This is, as we mentioned above, the easier of the two methods. All you need to do to import your old mails and contacts is change a few settings in your new Gmail account. Please note that this appears to only work with a Gmail account – a Google Apps account (a Gmail account that doesn’t use the @gmail.com address) may not have the same options.

import old mails gmail

This is what you need to do to move emails and messages from one Gmail account to another:

  1. Open your new Gmail account.
  2. Click on the gear icon in the top right and click on Settings.
  3. Click on Accounts and Import.
  4. Click on Import mail and contacts.
  5. In the pop-up window, enter your old email address, and click on Continue.
  6. Click on Continue on the next pop-up, and on the new pop-up window, sign-in to your old account.
  7. Click on Agree after signing in, and the second pop-up will close. On the next screen, level all the boxes (Import contacts, Import mail, Import new mail for the next 30 days) checked, and click on Start import.

That’s it, you’re done. Gmail will start to import your old mails from the account, and it will also import all the contacts. The process is not instantaneous, and depending on how much mail is in there, it could take a little while. Now, spread the word to everyone to let them know about your new address, and for the next 30 days, all mails to your old address will continue to come to your new address. After that, you can bid farewell to the old address with all your contacts and mails safe and sound.

Managing old Gmail address from the new one

If you think that you’re going to keep getting important mails on the old email address, you might want to check it from time to time. But managing multiple emails is a drag. If you can get it all in one place, why not, right?

You can set Gmail up to keep fetching mails from your old email account, but as we mentioned earlier, this process involves a few extra steps. This is what you do.

enable pop gmail

  1. Go to your old Gmail account.
  2. Click on the gear icon and then click on Settings.
  3. Click on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  4. In the POP Download section, click on Enable POP for all mail. Here, you can also choose what happens to mails in the old address – you can either leave a copy in the old account, mark it read, have it archived, or deleted, depending on what you prefer, through the dropdown menu in the POP Download section. If you don’t know what this should be, leave it on the default setting (which is to leave the copy in the inbox).
  5. Scroll down, and click on Save Changes. Now, sign out, and go to your new Gmail account.
  6. Once again, click on the gear icon and then click on Settings.
  7. Click on the Accounts and Import tab.
  8. In the fourth section, Check email from other accounts, click on Add an email account.
  9. In the pop-up window, enter your old email address, and click Next. On the next screen, choose Import emails from my other account (POP3), and then click Next.
  10. Here you can enter your password, and if you want to delete the messages from the old account, make sure that Leave a copy of retrieved messages on the server is unchecked.
  11. You can also check Label incoming messages so that emails that were sent to your old address are easy to find and don’t get mixed with your new account mails. The default label is the old email address, but you can change this by clicking on the drop box to the right of the option.
  12. Once you’ve chosen all the settings you want, click on Add Account.

That’s it, you’re done. With this, all your old emails will be transferred (slowly) while your contacts get backed up quickly, and all new emails will continue to show up in your new email account as well.

How to Use Google Authenticator App to Secure Your Gmail Account

Two-factor authentication is a needlessly complex sounding name for a very simple way to secure your email, social media, and most other online accounts. While two-factor authentication technically means you have two layers of security protecting your account – typically, one a password, and the second is usually a one-time password (OTP). So most people who talk about two-factor authentication are usually taking about OTPs.

Once you’ve enabled this additional layer of security on your account, you’ll get an OTP via text message or an authenticator app whenever you login to your Gmail or Twitter account, for instance. This means even if someone finds out what your password is, they won’t be able to log in to your account because they won’t have access to the one-time password.

It’s always good to have an extra layer of security when it comes to online accounts. Every other day we hear about people’s accounts being hacked online and enabling two-factor authentication is one way to make things difficult for miscreants.

Where to use two-factor authentication

Not all sites support two-factor authentication, but we think you should use this security feature on every single site that supports it. Sure, it adds an extra step while you are logging in to your online accounts but remember that it’s also protecting your account.

If you don’t want to use this everywhere, we suggest that you definitely enable it on all of your email accounts. As long as your email isn’t compromised, most of your online accounts are also going to be safe. It goes without saying that you might want to avoid email providers such as Yahoo, which aren’t exactly known for providing a good level of security.

How to use Google Authenticator app to add two-factor authentication

There are two primary ways to use two-factor authentication – text message or via an authenticator app. Most sites will send you OTPs via text message and that’s a perfectly good method of authentication. However if you go abroad or travel to a place with patchy or no network within your country, then you could be locked out of your account because the SMS will never arrive.

That is why we recommend using authenticator apps such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy or even some password managers such as 1Password. These apps show you OTPs even if the smartphone is in airplane mode. Google Authenticator is quite easy to use and the following steps will show you how to use it for Gmail. The steps are similar for other authenticator apps too.

google authenticator app setup sc Google Authenticator

  1. Open Google’s two-factor authentication page.
  2. Enter your password as and when prompted. You’ll reach the landing page for two-factor authentication. Click Get Started.
  3. Enter the phone number you want to use for OTP. This is just in case the authenticator app isn’t accessible. Click Next.
  4. Enter the one-time password sent to your phone. Click Next.
  5. Click Turn on.
  6. This enables two-factor authentication via SMS on your Google account. Now scroll down and click Setup under Authenticator app.
  7. In the pop-up, select the type of phone you have – Android or iPhone.
  8. Now you’ll see a QR code on screen. You can either scan this or click Can’t scan it to get a code for two-factor authentication. This is where you’ll have to switch to your smartphone.
  9. Download Google Authenticator on Android or iOS.
  10. Tap Begin Setup.
  11. Tap Scan barcode. This will fire up the camera on your smartphone and you can point that at the QR code on the computer screen. Alternatively you can tap Manual entry and enter the code on screen.
  12. On the Google two-factor authentication page, click Next.
  13. Enter the code on your authenticator app and click Verify.

This sets up two-factor authentication on your Google account. For more tutorials, visit our How To section.

How to Compress PDF Files and Reduce Size

Here’s a task we’ve all faced at some point in our lives – having to compress a PDF, be it to fit an arbitrary file size requirement, optimise for quick viewing, or save on data costs. There are several ways to go about doing so, depending on your platform, privacy needs, and how much time you have.

Online tools to compress PDF files for free

While this compression method is the easiest of the lot, it also presents the largest security risk, since your PDF file will be uploaded to the website’s servers. As a rule, you should completely avoid using free online tools for documents that contain personal, identifiable information, such as your Aadhaar, passport, and the like. On the other hand, if the information in the document is available to the public, the lack of privacy and security might not be a problem.

In such cases, you can look at one of the many options out there to compress your PDF file, with some of the popular ones being Smallpdf, iLovePDF, and PDF Compressor. Given an uncompressed 24MB document with words and images, the first three services performed about the same, giving out compressed PDF files around 1.12MB, 1.10MB, and 1.6MB respectively. With an alternative 5.55MB PDF, the results came to 319KB, 316KB, and 434KB.

In terms of user interface, Smallpdf looks like the best PDF file compression online service, but it restricts you to two files per hour, without payment. PDF Compressor is great if you need to convert multiple files in one go, as it’s the only one that allows selecting more than one file at a time.

Even then, you should rely on a service that carries a citation from a trusted authority. In the absence of a recommendation, it’s worth reading into the site’s privacy policy, and legal terms of use – such as this.

After you’ve done your share of research, the process to actually compress the PDF file(s) is similar for most websites:

  • Open the website, and select the PDF files you want to upload. On some websites, you might be able to drag and drop files.
  • Wait for the website to compress files, and then locate the download button. While some websites will let you directly download the files, others may send it to your email address.

Compress PDF files on Android and iOS

All the above online tools work across both computers and mobile devices. On Android, you can pull up PDF files from internal storage or cloud services on the file selection stage. With iOS, the PDF files must be stored on a supported cloud service – Dropbox, Google Drive, and the like. While some websites will hand you a zip file, others will open the compressed PDF right in your browser, which you can then send via the usual means.

Compress PDF files using Adobe Acrobat

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is a free PDF reader, but the PDF optimisation feature is available only as part of the paid Acrobat Pro subscription. If you’re willing to pony up more than a thousand bucks a month, here’s how it works:

  • Open the PDF file in Adobe Acrobat.
  • Click Tools > Optimise PDF.
  • From the toolbar that appears above the PDF, choose Reduce File Size.
  • To get more control, head into Advanced Optimisation. Then click Audit space usage to see what page elements are taking up how much space.
  • Once you’re satisfied, press OK.
  • Go to File > Save As, and make a copy.

How to Compress PDF Files and Reduce SizeCompress PDF files for free on Windows

There are several free Windows software apps that will compress PDFs. One popular option is 4Dots Free PDF Compress, which supports everything from Windows 7, 8.1, and 10. There are two ways to use it.

Here’s how to compress PDF files using this Windows software via the right-click menu:

  • During installation, allow 4Dots to hook into Windows’ right-click menu.
  • Then locate the PDF file, and right-click on it.
  • Choose Compress PDF.

Alternatively, you can reduce PDF size by opening the app:

  • Open 4Dots Free PDF Compress.
  • Click *Add button, and select the files. You can also drag and drop them onto the app.
  • Select output folder, image quality, and hit Compress.

Compress PDF files for free on macOS

On macOS, you don’t need to download any app. The in-built Preview app can reduce file size of PDFs.

Here’s how to compress PDF files for free on Mac OS:

  • Open a PDF in Preview – for most people just double-clicking on the PDF file should do just that.
  • Select File > Export.
  • Under the Quartz Filter option, choose Reduce File Size.
  • Choose export location, and click save.

How to Block Any Website On Your Computer, Phone, or Network

There are several reasons why you might want to block certain websites on your computer. Some websites could be spreading viruses, contain explicit content or even be trying to steal your personal data. While you may well be more than capable of avoiding these websites, but that doesn’t stand true for every one who uses your device. In such cases, it might be best to block certain websites.

There are different ways to go about blocking websites. You can choose to block websites only on specific browsers, the entire operating system, or indeed your network router. Here’s how to block websites.

On your computer

If you want to control access to websites on just one machine, then you can set up block at the operating system level. This method for blocking websites is not too hard to configure and will work across browsers.

How to Block Any Website On Windows Computers

One of the backbones of the Internet is the DNS system that translates easy to remember (and type) names such as www.google.com into equivalent IP addresses (8.8.8.8). While you use DNS servers to get to websites, your computer also has something called a HOSTS file which can have this information stored locally. This can be used to disable access to unwanted websites. We checked this method with both Windows 7 and Windows 8.

1. Make sure you have administrator access on your computer. Sign in to your PC using an administrator account and go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\

2. Double-click the file named “hosts” and select Notepad from the list of programs to open the file. Click OK. The last two lines of your hosts file should read “# 127.0.0.1 localhost” and “# ::1 localhost”.

2a. In case you can’t edit the file, you’ll need to right-click the file labelled hosts and select Properties. Click the Security tab, select the administrator account and click Edit.

2b. In the pop-up, select the account again and check Full control. Click Apply > Yes. Now click OK in all pop-ups.

3. At the end of the file, you can add the addresses of websites to block. To do this, just add a line at the end of the file, with 127.0.0.1 and then the name of the site you want to block – this will redirect the site’s name to your local computer.

4. To block Google, for example, add “127.0.0.1 www.google.com” to the end of the file without the quote marks. You can block as many sites as you want this way, but remember you can only add one per line.

5. Repeat this step until you’ve added all websites you want to block.

6. Now close the hosts file and click Save. Reboot your computer for the changes to take effect and you’ll find that all those websites are now blocked.

How to Block Any Website On Your Mac

Here’s how to block websites on OS X .

  1. 1. Make sure you have administrator access to your Mac. Now open Terminal. You can find it under /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
  2. 2. Type sudo nano /etc/hosts and press enter. Enter the user (login) password when prompted.
  3. 3. This will open the file /etc/hosts in a text editor. Type the name of the website in a new line in this format “127.0.0.1 www.blockedwebsite.com” (minus the quotes). For each website you want to block, start a new line and type the same command with only the name of the website being replaced. When done, press ctrl+x and then Y to save changes.
  4. 4. Now key in the command sudo dscacheutil -flushcache and press Enter or restart your machine to make sure the websites are blocked.

How to Block Any Website On Browser Level

Blocking a website on any browser is the easiest way to get the job done.

On Firefox, you can install an addon called BlockSite to block website.

  1. Install the addon, press ctrl+shift+a, and click Extensions on the left. Now click Options under BlockSite. In the pop-up, click Add and type the name of the website you want blocked. Repeat the process for all websites you don’t want to access. Click OK.
  2. Now these websites will be blocked on Firefox. You can also set a password in BlockSite to prevent others from editing the list of blocked websites. This can be done via the options menu described in the previous step.

BlockSite is also available on Google Chrome.

Internet Explorer lets you block websites easily. Here’s how.

  • Open the browser and go to Tools (alt+x) > Internet Options. Now click the security tab and then click the red Restricted sites icon. Click the Sites button below the icon.
  • Now in the pop-up, manually type the websites you want to block one-by-one. Click Add after typing the name of each site. When done, click Close and click OK in all other windows. Now these websites will be blocked in Internet Explorer.

On your phone or tablet

How to Block Any Website On Your iPhone and iPad

Apple has some handy parental control tools that let you block certain websites. Here’s how.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Restrictions.
  2. Tap on Enable Restrictions. Now set a passcode for restrictions. This should ideally be different from the passcode you use to unlock the phone.
  3. After the passcode is set, scroll down and tap Websites. Here you can either choose to limit adult content, or allow access to specific websites only.
  4. In specific websites only, there’s a short list of allowed websites including Discovery Kids and Disney, but you can also add sites by tapping on Add a Website.
  5. If you tap Limit adult content, Apple blocks websites that are deemed objectionable, but you can whitelist websites by tapping on Add a Website under Always Allow, or blacklist them by tapping on it under Never Allow.
  6. If you try to access a blocked website, you see a message telling you it is restricted. Tap the Allow Website and key in the Restrictions passcode to open that website.

How to Block Any Website On Your iPhone and iPad

How to Block Any Website On Your Android Phone

On Android, you’ll need to edit the hosts file on your device to redirect sites you want to block. You’ll need a file manager, and a text editor – the easiest option is to use our favourite app ES File Explorer, which lets you do both things. Here’s how it works.

  1. Install ES File Explorer Open ES File Explorer and tap the “/” button at the top. Tap on system > etc.
  2. In this folder, you’ll see the hosts file – tap it and in the pop up menu, tap text. In the next pop up, tap ES Note Editor.
  3. Tap the three dots button in the top right, and tap edit.
  4. Now, you’re editing the file, and to block sites, you want to redirect their DNS. To do this, just start a new line, and type “127.0.0.1 www.blockedwebsite.com” (without the quotes, where blocked website is the name of the site you’re blocking) for each website you want to block. For example, you’ll have to type 127.0.0.1 www.google.com to block Google.
  5. Reboot your Android device.

If that method is too complex for you, you can install an anti-virus app such as Trend Micro that lets you block websites.

  1. Install the app and run it. Go to Options > Safe surfing.
  2. Now swipe to Parental Controls and click set up account. Create an account and you’ll see an option called Blocked List in the app. Tap it, and tap Add. Now add the websites you want to block one at a time. Once that is done, you won’t be able to access these websites on your Android smartphone.

How to Block Any Website On Windows Phone

You can’t do a full block of websites on Windows Phone, buy you can download the AVG Family Safety browser. By default it blocks websites with malicious or explicit content, and if you purchase an AVG anti-virus licence and create an account, you can customise the list of blocked websites.

How to Block Any Website On Your Network

If you have a Wi-Fi network in the house, then it is easier to just set up a block on unwanted websites via your Wi-Fi router. Most routers don’t have very user friendly interfaces, so this can be a little daunting, and of course, the steps can vary for each router, but the basic process you follow is pretty similar, so if you’re just a little patient, this is actually pretty easy.

Changing the wrong setting could accidentally de-activate your connection, so if you get stuck, call your ISP right away.

  1. We tried this on a Beetel 450TC1 router provided by MTNL in Delhi, and with a Binatone Router provided by Airtel. The steps were exactly the same for both. To start, you need to go to your router’s settings. Open any browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. Press Enter. Some routers use a different address, so if this doesn’t work, check and see if it is mentioned in the documentation from your ISP.
  2. Now you will have to enter a username and password. This would have been set up during the installation of your connection – defaults are usually username: admin, and password: password. If not, check with your ISP and get the correct username and password.
  3. As mentioned earlier, the interface can differ. In our MTNL router, we found that we could block websites under Access Management > Filter.
  4. Here there’s a drop-down menu called Filter type selection. We selected URL Filter and typed the website we wanted to block in the URL field below. Above this field, there is an option called Active. Here we saw two buttons, Yes and No. We selected Yes and hit Save. This blocked the website on our network.
  5. You can create 16 lists of blocked websites, each containing 16 websites, using this method, letting you block up to 256 websites. Again, this will vary from router or router.

How to Use System Restore on Windows 10 Computers

If something goes wrong with your Windows 10 computer, due to a new app installation or a recent driver upgrade, simply trying to uninstall or roll back the driver doesn’t always work. That’s where Windows 10 System Restore comes in, as it essentially lets you jump back to a previous time, when Windows was working just fine.

But how does that work, you ask? Well, it does that by creating “restore points” from time to time, generally when you install a new piece of software, or a Windows 10 update. Plus, it creates one every week anyway, and you can do so manually anytime.

Windows 10 restore points are effectively an image of the important Windows stuff, your system files, registry settings, and hardware drivers themselves. It doesn’t take any of your personal documents into consideration, so this isn’t a backup by any means. Depending on your system settings, a small part of your hard-drive is dedicated to storing these restore points, which automatically clears out the old to make space for the new. You’ll still need to back up all your personal data yourself, but Windows 10 restore points can help troubleshoot software issues on your Windows PC.

When you open System Restore, you’ll be presented with the available restore points, which will allow you to return to a specific time in the past. In short, Windows 10 System Restore allows you to revert to a state when your computer was working just fine.

Before you use the feature, you should know how it impacts your computer. Since Windows 10 System Restore doesn’t make a backup of your personal documents, restoring your system won’t change any of them. Instead, it keeps a track of all the apps you had, so once you choose a point, any apps that were installed after that will be gone, and the uninstalled ones will come back.

Once the process is done, you will need to re-run the installers/ uninstallers to properly get rid of the ones you don’t want. Thankfully, Windows 10 does present you with a list of affected programs, making this process simpler.

How to set up System Restore on Windows 10

By default, the Windows 10 System Restore option is only turned on for your primary drive, which contains all the necessary Windows files. If you’d like to extend that coverage, follow these steps:

  1. Hit Start, and type in “restore”.
  2. Choose Create a restore point.
  3. In the System Protection tab, under Protection Settings, you’ll see a list of available drives on your computer, with an On or Off label next to them.

  2. Choose Create a restore point.

The Windows 10 restore process will take over your computer, and finish in about 15 minutes, more depending on your CPU and hard-drive speed. Once it restarts, you can login to see if everything is working fine. If it didn’t have the desired result, you can revert to your latest system settings instead, since System Restore always creates another restore point before starting itself.

How to Return Items Purchased on Amazon

Amazon Great Indian Sale has kicked off, seeing huge discounts across a wide catalogue of products. The Amazon sale for the next four days will see discounts, cashbacks and other offers for products ranging from mobiles, tablets to laptops, TVs and more. Of course, the problem with shopping online, including on occasions such as the Amazon sale, is that you don’t see a product before buying it, and have to pay before you can try whatever you’re buying. We recently had to return some items to Amazon India, and if you’re ever in the same position, then this is what you need to know to easily make a return.

Amazon Great Indian Sale Starts: How to Get the Best Deals

  2. Each order will be in a box. Scroll down to the order you want to return.

  5. On the right-side of the products you want to return, select a reason for return from the drop-down menu.

  7. Click Continue.
  8. In the next page, Amazon will offer a way to resolve the problem. In most cases there will just be one option selected by default – Refund. Click Continue.
  9. The next page is where you schedule a pickup. Select a pickup date from the drop-down menu.
  10. Your delivery address will be displayed by default. If you want to schedule a pickup at another address, click Change address.
  11. When you’re ready to complete the return process, click Submit. Amazon will send someone to pick up the goods you want to return. They’ll give you a return receipt. Keep that safe until the refund is credited to your account.

How to Reset or Hard Reboot an iPhone or iPad

Despite all of Apple’s engineering efforts, there are some times when your iPhone or iPad stops responding to your touch and you need to reset iPhone. And no matter how long you hold down the power button, the option to power off your phone just doesn’t show up. Essentially, the iPhone or iPad has hung due to a software bug, caused by either iOS itself, or a misbehaving app. In such a case, there’s a straightforward way around the problem. That involves forcing your iPhone or iPad to restart – called a reset or hard restart, and erroneously, even hard reset iPhone by some –  by holding down a combination of two buttons for 10 seconds or more, which will then clear all running processes and well, forcibly reboot the device. It’s not recommended that you do this unless your device is frozen, but sometimes it can be an essential last resort.

Starting with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the Home button isn’t a physical button anymore. That’s why the button combination is different on those devices, as opposed to the older models before that.

How to reset/ hard reboot on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

This method works on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. To force your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus to hard reset aka reboot iPhone, press and hold down the Sleep/ Wake button on top of your device, and the volume down button on the side of the phone, until the screen goes black and Apple logo appears in the middle. This might take up to 20 seconds, so don’t let go until you see the Apple logo.

How to Reset or Hard Reboot an iPhone or iPadHow to reset/ hard reboot on older iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, and older iPhone models

This method works on all iPhone and iPad models, except the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. To force your iPhone or iPad to hard reboot aka reset, press and hold down the Home button (under the display) and the power button (or the Sleep/ Wake button, as Apple calls it) on top of the device, until the screen goes black and the Apple logo appears in the middle. This method works with the iPads as well.

How to Stop WhatsApp from Downloading and Saving Photos, Videos Automatically on Android, iPhone

WhatsApp is used by over a 1.2 billion people worldwide, and 200 million in India alone. In fact, it is probably one of the first apps anyone in India downloads when they get a new smartphone as it has become the default means of texting in the country. However, it can become an annoyance too when it downloads all the media files automatically, from pictures to videos to, more recently, GIFs, not to mention audio files and videos. These not only clutter your phone’s gallery and music player, but also eat up a lot of storage and data. Here’s how you can stop WhatsApp from automatically saving photos and audio on your phone.

How to Stop Auto Downloading and Saving of Pictures, Videos and Other Media on Whatsapp for Android

WhatsApp for Android has a switch that lets you stop images and videos from downloading. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Open WhatsApp, make sure you are seeing the main window – where all your chats are displayed. Tap the three vertical dots on the top right > Settings.
  2. Now tap Chat settings > Media auto-download. You’ll see three options: When using cellular data, When connected on Wi-Fi and When roaming. Tap each one and disable auto-downloads by unchecking all three options – Images, Audio and Video.

To view photos, you will have to download them. When you do, WhatsApp saves them in a folder, and you can get inundated with stupid memes and other unwanted content, which is visible to anyone who open’s your phone’s Gallery App. However, it is possible to stop these photos from appearing in the Gallery app. Here’s how:

  1. Download Quickpic and open the app.
  2. Navigate to the WhatsApp media folders. The location of the WhatsApp folder varies across devices but it should typically be the following: Internal Storage (sometimes labelled sdcard0) > WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Images, > WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Audio, and WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Videos.
  3. Long-press the WhatsApp Images folder and make sure that it is selected. Do the same with the WhatsApp Video and WhatsApp Audio folders.
  4. After selecting the three folders, tap the three dots icon on the top-right > Hide. This will ensure that the Gallery app doesn’t show them. You can still view these images and videos within WhatsApp and through any apps that let you view hidden folders. But if you pass your phone to someone, you no longer need worry about them seeing the WhatsApp photos and videos through the Gallery app.
