Hyperloop One to Hold ‘Vision for India’ Event in New Delhi on Tuesday

Hyperloop One, the US startup that is developing transportation based on the hyperloop concept, has sent invites for an event in New Delhi on Tuesday. Called ‘Vision for India’, the event is said to be a “discussion hosted by Hyperloop One on the need for transformative transportation”.

Hyperloop One to Hold 'Vision for India' Event in New Delhi on Tuesday

Chief guest at the event is the Minister of Railways, Suresh Prabhu, while the keynote speaker will be Amitabh Kant, the CEO of NITI Aayog. Also present at the event will be Hyperloop One Executive Chairman and Co-Founder, Shervin Pishevar, and Hyperloop One Global CEO Rob Lloyd. The event is scheduled to begin at 2:15pm IST.

To recall, back in January, Hyperloop One disclosed a list of locations around the world vying to put near-supersonic rail transit system to the test. These included Delhi and Mumbai from India.

The startup company keen to revolutionise the way people and cargo travel in January said that 35 contenders remained from a field of 2,600 teams in a Hyperloop One Grand Challenge launched in May 2015. Viable submissions had to be condoned by government agencies that would likely be involved in regulating and, ideally, funding the futuristic rail.

Projects in the running included hyperloop rail connecting Sydney and Melbourne; Shanghai and Hangzhou; Mumbai and Delhi, and London and Edinburgh. There were also 11 US teams in contention. Dubai late last year agreed to a deal to evaluate construction of a hyperloop link that could slash travel times to Emirati capital Abu Dhabi to minutes.

Alphabet’s Waymo Sues Uber for Stealing Self-Driving Car Tech

The race to develop self-driving vehicles took a new turn on Thursday when Google’s parent company Alphabet filed a lawsuit against Uber, accusing it of stealing technology.
Alphabet's Waymo Sues Uber for Stealing Self-Driving Car Tech

Alphabet contends that a manager at its autonomous car subsidiary Waymo took technical data with him when he left to launch a competing venture that went on to become Otto, Uber’s self-driving vehicle unit, in a reported $680 million deal.

“Otto and Uber have taken Waymo’s intellectual property so that they could avoid incurring the risk, time and expense of independently developing their own technology,” Waymo said in a San Francisco federal court filing.

Waymo is calling for a trial to stop Otto and Uber from using what it says is patented technology.

Waymo also wants unspecified damages in what it described in court documents as “an action for trade secret misappropriation, patent infringement, and unfair competition.”

The company argued that a “calculated theft” of its technology “reportedly netted Otto employees over half a billion dollars and allowed Uber to revive a stalled program, all at Waymo’s expense.”

Responding to an AFP request for comment, an Uber spokeswoman said in an email that “we take the allegations made against Otto and Uber employees seriously and we will review this matter carefully.”

The California-based ride-sharing service acquired the commercial transport-focused tech startup Otto last year as it pressed ahead with its pursuit of self-driving technology.

Anthony Levandowski, a co-founder of Otto, a 90-person startup, was put in charge of Uber’s efforts to develop self-driving technology for personal driving, delivery and trucking.

Cars that ‘see’
Waymo’s lawsuit contends that Levandowski downloaded more than 14,000 proprietary files from a highly confidential design server to a laptop in December 2015.

A week later, after removing a data storage card, Levandowski reformatted the company laptop in what the suit maintains was an attempt to erase any trace of what happened to the downloaded data.

The suit is focused on proprietary information about LiDAR sensors, which use lasers to scan and essentially enable vehicles to “see” what is around them, according to the lawsuit. The information stored on the Waymo server wound up at Otto, it says.

Waymo says it has invested tens of millions of dollars in the technology.

“Thanks in part to this highly advanced LiDAR technology, Waymo became the first company to complete a fully self-driving trip on public roads in a vehicle without a steering wheel,” the suit says.

After downloading confidential information regarding Waymo’s LiDAR systems and other technology while working at Waymo, Levandowski attended meetings with high-level executives at Uber’s headquarters in San Francisco in January 2016, the lawsuit contends.

By the end of that month, Levandowski officially formed a venture that would become Otto and resigned from Waymo, according to the court filing.

A self-driving truck built by Otto made a pioneering delivery of beer in Colorado in November.

An 18-wheel semi made the 120-mile (190-kilometer) trip from Fort Collins through the center of crowded Denver to Colorado Springs using only its panoply of cameras, radar and sensors to read the road.

Uber is also trying out a self-driving car service in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The major US car manufacturers all have driverless car development programs, as does the tech giant Apple.

Many automakers already have cars on the road with advanced driver-assist technology, most notably electric car producer Tesla.

Rough road
The Waymo lawsuit comes as Uber’s image is suffering from a series of blows.

Chief executive Travis Kalanick quit US President Donald Trump’s business advisory group earlier this month under pressure from a growing movement to boycott the ride-sharing service because of his connection to the new administration.

A #DeleteUber campaign picked up speed on social media, urging people to drop the service and switch to rival Lyft – which saw its popularity soar after it promised to donate $1 million to the American Civil Liberties Union, which has filed lawsuits against Trump’s measures.

This week, Kalanick announced an “urgent investigation” at the company after a former employee wrote a blog post alleging pervasive sexual harassment and sexism at the firm.

H1B Visas Worries ‘Hyped Up’, Says TCS Boss N Chandrasekaran

Tata Consultancy Services chief N Chandrasekaran on Wednesday said concerns surrounding the H1B visa are hyped and asked the $155-billion (roughly Rs. 10,37,513 crores) domestic IT industry not to get paranoid as these are exciting times with lots of opportunities.H1B Visas Worries 'Hyped Up', Says TCS Boss N Chandrasekaran

Chandrasekaran, who is set to take over the chairmanship of Tata Sons next week, said at the annual Nasscom conference in Mumbai this evening, “Every time there is a regulatory change or some kind of a perceived challenge, in our industry, everybody says ‘there is a problem’ … and it is hyped up whether it is H1B, whether it is increase in re-staffing.”

In fact, he said these are exciting times for the IT industry given the exponential demand for technology as every business reorients itself.

“Fundamentally, every business is going to be powered by technology. So, the opportunity and the demand that we are going to see is just exponential,” he said.

“Change is something you have to live with. You cannot get overly paranoid, I don’t think there is a cause for concern, I really feel the opportunity is immense,” he added.

Chandrasekaran, under whose leadership TCS grew to become the largest domestic IT company, said the industry will have to adapt to changes, build capabilities, IP, form new partnerships and reskill its employees.

Building skills, hiring the right talent and re-engineering senior people is also important, he said, using a cricket analogy of waiting for the loose ball.

It can be noted that there are heightened concerns, after a change in the US to adopting more protectionist policies. The proposed H1B visa changes have rattled the sector and also prevented industry lobby Nasscom from disclosing its revenue guidance for the next fiscal.

Chandrasekaran also made a strong case for not “rubbishing” the domestic services companies, which have not been able to do products like Microsoft’s Windows.

He also sound critical of those who call the work of domestic IT companies as “labour arbitrage”, saying a lot of world-class skills have been used by the industry.

He hoped one day a domestic company will be able to create a widely used product like Windows or an Apple, but asked the industry to give such entrepreneurs a chance.

Welcoming proliferation of digital in the financial world with payments, he said digital needs to go deeper into other sectors like education and healthcare as well.

He said various flagship government initiatives like Digital India, Skill India, Make in India have to ultimately converge in the digital sphere and asked the IT industry to make it happen.

“Multiple initiatives of the government will all get connected at some stage…All these initiatives we have to bring it together. Best people to bring it together is IT professionals,” he said.

Clash of Clans Maker Supercell Talks Strategy in a Post-Pokemon Go World

Supercell, the maker of hit mobile game Clash of Clans, said on Wednesday sales growth stalled last year due to competition from new challengers such as Nintendo Co’s Pokemon Go, though earnings rose.

Clash of Clans Maker Supercell Talks Strategy in a Post-Pokemon Go World

The Finnish company, majority owned by China’s Tencent Holdings Ltd, said profits benefited from lower spending on advertising and the successful launch of its latest game, Clash Royale.

“Despite tighter competition, this was the best year so far in financial terms. Clash Royale was a huge hit,” Chief Executive Ilkka Paananen told reporters.

Clash of Clans, a war strategy game in which players build fortresses, form clans with other players and battle it out in a Medieval-style fantasy world, has remained on the list of top-earning applications since its launch in 2012.

In 2016, it was ranked No. 2 after Mixi Inc’s Monster Strike, according to research company App Annie. Clash Royale, which features Clash of Clans characters, was No. 5.

Augmented-reality Pokemon Go, which has players walking around real life neighbourhoods to catch and train Pokemon, has the biggest number of active users but in revenue terms lagged Clash of Clans.

“In the summer, when Pokemon Go was a huge hit, a taxi driver asked me what would be our counter-attack. I said there’s no point in doing something against a competitor, we must only focus in doing what we do best, improve our games further,” Paananen said.

Rather than launching a variety of games for different audiences, Supercell has focused on developing a handful. Using a “freemium” price strategy, its games are free to download, but generate revenue from in-game purchases.

The strategy has helped Supercell avoid the problems faced by the likes of Rovio Entertainment, which has launched several titles but failed to create a follow up hit to its Angry Birds.

Supercell’s earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation rose to EUR 917 million ($967 million or roughly Rs. 6,518 crores) last year from 848 million in 2015. Revenue was broadly flat at EUR 2.1 billion (roughly Rs. 14,928 crores).

IHS Technology analyst Jack Kent said the flat revenue indicated new challenges.

“The overall mobile games market is still increasing, but the explosive growth driven by the rise in smartphone penetration and the shift to a freemium model is slowing,” he said.

“Supercell is still making a lot of money… (but it) is also facing the challenge of how to follow up on its initial major hits.”

Paananen said the company might test a new game in selected markets later this year, but there were no immediate plans to do so.

Founded in 2010, Supercell has just 213 employees but has become one of Finland’s most profitable companies.

Traversing the Social Media Minefield

Mainly because of the amount of money they bring in, many people expect celebrities and other prominent figures to have thicker skins than the average Jane or Joe. However — as evidenced by the numbers of celebrities who’ve forsaken social media, or who have handed the keys to their accounts to their PR teams — fame and fortune are not effective defenses against an all-out assault by faceless trolls.

Saturday Night Live cast member Leslie Jones temporarily unplugged her Twitter account after being bombarded by racist and sexist attacks. Girls star Lena Dunham quit Twitter after being body shamed and verbally abused. Filmmaker Joss Whedon fled Twitter last year, after being targeted with verbal abuse for his portrayal of Black Widow in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Count the likes of Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Jennifer Lawrence among the celebs who simply don’t care to join social network, as least not using their given names. And Sia doesn’t even want the public to get a good look at her face.

Some of the prominent celebs to speak about social media’s potential for inflicting harm include Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp and Keira Knight, who has said that sharing with the public opens you up to “a lot of criticism and a lot of people telling you they hate you.”

No One Is Safe

While attacks on private individuals can be more personal and more targeted, they’re typically much less numerous. Anyone who is visible to large numbers of people — from business owners to YouTube stars — is vulnerable to a massive onslaught due to the sheer volume of people who flock to their accounts.

Cary Peterson, an American federal lobbyist and UN delegate, has experienced decades of online abuse. Bullying, slander and defamation have cost him job promotions, business deals, friendships, millions of dollars in legal fees, and a marriage, he said.

“These online mobs are real, and the general public needs to be aware of it, and how serious it is,” Peterson told TechNewsWorld.

Almost daily, Peterson finds himself battling faceless accounts, and when people start to believe the allegations posted from such accounts, that’s when things can spiral out of control.

“I’ve been rather fortunate in these instances to still be alive and well, but I’ve seen many people and businesses over my past 20 years doing business online, wiped out and terminated,” he said. “Nonetheless, it’s quite fascinating what can be done from a laptop and Internet connection these days — and cost little to nothing to execute.”

Nowhere Is Safe

Despite all the good they do in keeping family and friends connected, social media sites have a dark side. They quickly can become breeding grounds for harassment, noted Scott A Spackey, a career coach and family counselor.

“Social media has become a forum for intimidation, abuse and shaming because of its lack of accountability,” he told TechNewsWorld. “Virtual reality is remote and has the illusion of being impersonal, which encourages people to behave in ways they would NEVER do in person or public.”

Massive Twitter campaigns can be sparked by people using fake names and profiles, noted Wendy Lewis, president of Wendy Lewis & Co. Recently, much of it stemmed from divisive politics, fueled by the unrestrained comments of certain politicians.

“If it’s OK for a presidential candidate to practice name calling — like ‘the devil’ — or making comments about his dissenters’ physique …, then it may seem more acceptable to others who are so inclined,” she told TechNewsWorld.

Business and public figures have a bit more recourse at Facebook, compared to Twitter. The page owner can remove posts, report harassment, and possibly prompt the banning of the user, Lewis noted.

“If they are aggressive, you may see that they attempt the same posts under a different fake profile name, and keep going by commenting on every post on the page,” Lewis said. “As a last resort, you can reset your Facebook page privacy settings, and even set your page up to have all comments approved before they go live.”

Regardless of the forum or format, it doesn’t take much searching to find an online thread littered with the type of language rarely used in public places offline.

While the reporting and banning tools help, it’s up to humanity to try harder to be more human online, suggested parent advocate Sue Scheff, author of the upcoming book Shame Nation.

“It’s time for all of us to start being an upstander, reaching out to those that are struggling,” she told TechNewsWorld.

If you “receive a disturbing text or sext, don’t forward it or chuckle — stop it!” Scheff urged. “Comfort friends — be there. Most importantly, be part of the solution. Don’t be silent. There’s nothing worse than believing you’re alone.”

Microsoft and Intel’s Project Evo Ups the PC Game

Microsoft and Intel on Wednesday announced Project Evo, their highly anticipated collaboration to create the next generation of personal computers. The project aims to expand on new advances in artificial intelligence, mixed reality, advanced security and gaming,

Terry Myerson, executive vice president of the Windows and Devices Group at Microsoft, unveiled some of Project Evo’s ambitious plans at the Windows Hardware Engineering Community (WinHEC) event in Shenzhen, China.

Through the collaboration, the companies will push the boundaries of a personal computer’s capabilities in the near future, he said. Technologies under development include far-field speech and wake-on-voice enabled through Cortana, biometrics and voice authentication in Windows Hello, spacial audio, and HDR support for gaming.

Project Evo — particularly its expanded use of Cortana — invites comparisons to the digital assistant tools found in Amazon Echo and Google Home, standalone speakers that use Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant respectively. Though their capabilities differ, each uses voice communications to interact with the automated home.

However, Project Evo seems geared toward making the personal computer into a much more sophisticated device — one that can be accessed and operated in ways never before seen.

Home Hub Connection?

Essentially, users will be able to wake up a PC, whether it’s open or shut, simply by saying “Hello Cortana.” Through voice commands, users will be able to access the information they need either directly from their personal computing device or from the cloud.

“This is going to make the PC way more intuitive than it is today,” Intel SVP Navin Shenoy, general manager of the Client Computing Group, told WinHEC attendees. “You no longer need to be directly in front of your PC to activate Cortana.”

“There are certainly aspects of Project Evo that are likely to compete directly with Amazon Alexa and Google Home,” noted Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.

However, it’s likely that “Intel and Microsoft are after a fundamentally bigger game,” he told TechNewsWorld.

In the case of Project Evo, the companies are working with much more powerful computing capabilities than Amazon and Google are using with their home hubs.

“Microsoft has the technology in the cloud, not the home,” noted Jim McGregor, principal analyst at Tirias Research.

“The problem is that the PC is not the center of the home or the consumer experience,” he told TechNewsWorld.

While there is room for improving the PC experience, this project is not going to push Microsoft into a direct competition with Amazon, McGregor said.

Passwords Passe

The Project Evo collaboration will provide advanced security to the PC, including biometric authentication using Windows Hello, eliminating the requirement to memorize multiple passwords, Shenoy said.

A major aspect of the collaboration is to provide mixed reality experiences in PCs that are affordable to the average consumer, and also to use head-mounted displays that blend the physical and virtual world in ways not seen before.

Microsoft has submitted its HoloLens to the Chinese government for approval, Myerson announced at WinHEC, and the company expects to make the devices available to developers and commercial customers during the first half of 2017.

New Reality

Together with Intel, Microsoft also shared specifications for PCs that can support headsets capable of mixed reality. New head-mounted displays from Acer, Asus, Dell, HMD and Lenovo are expected in 2017. 3Glasses, the leading HMD hardware developer in China, will make its Blubur S1 headset ready for Windows 10 by the first half of 2017, reaching more than 5 million active monthly customers in that market.

HMD Developers Kits will be made available next year at the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco.

Microsoft and Intel also are working on ways to make PCs more capable in terms of gaming, as Intel’s 7th Gen Core Processors allow for immersive gaming experiences such as 4K gaming, high dynamic range video, the ability to broadcast real-time competition, and connecting the Xbox controller to the PC.

Project Evo will open mixed reality to a wider segment of the PC owner base at an affordable price point, said Lewis Ward, research director for gaming and VR/AR at IDC.

However, “you generally get what you pay for” in terms of the speed and processing capability for the competitive gaming audience, he warned.

“Intel is moving up the GPU ladder for sure, and Evo is the next logical step for them,” Ward told TechNewsWorld, “but they’re still not ready to compete with AMD and Nvidia at the high end of the GPU market, which is where a lot of hardcore PC gamers in particular tend to cluster.”
